So What's Your Story? - 01/18/10 - Day 18
Aileen and Valerie posted a photo:

Valerie: Exactly one year ago today, Aileen and I met for the first time.
My interpretation of the story goes like this...
I was introduced to Aileen's friend/ex-girlfriend by a co-worker of mine. My co-worker told me that his friend saw me and thought I was cute. He found her myspace and gave me the link. I started talking to her and started hanging out with her. She'd say many negative things about Aileen and I hadn't met Aileen yet. I received an e-mail from Aileen and we began to talk. We didn't talk too much though because I had heard so many bad things about her, but I wasn't opposed to talking to her or hanging out with her.
One day, I was hanging out with Aileen's ex-girlfriend and she told me she had to go to Aileen's birthday party. I wanted to go, but she told me I had to ask Aileen first. So I texted Aileen and she told me I could attend. I didn't want to show up without a present so I went to the mall and bought her a card and a lollipop.
When I arrived there with her ex, everyone was singing happy birthday to Aileen and I didn't want to go in and disrupt it, but her ex insisted that it would be okay and that we go in. I felt so rude and uncomfortable when everyone turned and looked at us.
I could tell that Aileen was upset that night, but I didn't want her to be. I know I showed up with her ex, but I still wanted Aileen to be happy and have a great birthday party. When it was time to take her ex home, I asked if I could spend the night at Aileen's house and get to know her better, but her parents said that I couldn't. I left and Aileen let me borrow her jacket because I was cold. I secretly slept with it that night.
I was able to spend time with Aileen the next day and that's when I really got to know her better. We didn't hang out alone, but we did run up to the same baby animals book at Borders. We talked a little bit and I realized that her ex was lying. Aileen wasn't a horrible person and she was extremely interesting.
From then on, I stopped hanging out with and talking to her ex. I began texting Aileen and she was there for me. She would talk to me on the phone and I became more and more attracted to her. I realized that her ex had been lying and that Aileen really was an amazing person.
Even though things started out with a lot of lies that her ex would tell us both, I'm really glad that things worked out the way they did. I saw Aileen for who she was and I found out how sweet and caring she really is.
I love Aileen so much and I really believe that everything worked out the way it did for a reason.

Aileen: Exactly a year ago today, I had the pleasure of meeting Valerie at my birthday party. However, that had not been the first time I had seen or heard of her.
I was really excited when I found out a Jamba Juice was opening at my nearest mall. I have always loved Jamba Juice and I will admit that one of my goals in life was to be a Jamba employee. Little did I know that a Jamba employee would steal my heart.
I saw Valerie, or at the time “Jamba Girl,” on one random shopping day. I was contemplating buying a smoothie but my mother refused to get me one. I saw a cute little (girl, no boy, no girl) person standing by the cash register. I quickly asked my cousin if she thought it was a boy or girl. We stood there for a good 3 minutes discussing her gender and decided she was a girl. After that incident, it seemed as though Jamba girl, for the lack of name, would always be working and would always be my cashier. I knew she saw hundreds of customers a day so I didn’t even have a chance of standing out to her. I quickly snapped back to reality and went on with my life. She was just the cute Jamba girl that always happens to be my cashier.
A good amount of time passed since my first customer encounter and the actual meeting on my birthday. I had a girlfriend at the time and told her there was a cute girl working at Jamba juice. Who doesn’t share great news like that? She wanted me to show her Jamba girl and I took it upon myself to find a picture of her. I am not an e-stalker by any means. Yes, I can find anything and everything on the internet but I never use it to stalk. Type Valerie Jamba Juice and her myspace will come up. Trust me. Once I found her myspace I realized she had a girlfriend, which didn’t really matter to me, and I sent it to my ex for approval. She did not find Jamba girl as cute as I had described her. I recall her being described as “dateable.”
A couple of months passed and I found one of my classmates had just recently gotten hired at Jamba. I still didn’t know Jamba girl’s name and decided I would summon my ex to ask for her name. Of course I didn’t want my name to be mentioned at all since I knew this particular person would probably end up telling Jamba girl I asked about her. My ex explained that she thought Jamba girl was cute and wanted to know her name. We found out her name was Valerie and she had a girlfriend with pink hair. I remember literally laughing out loud because 1. Valerie did not match her, and 2. The following fact was random. I happened to have purple hair at the time. After that, I forgot about her since I hardly went to Jamba Juice and I would never become her friend.
One fateful day in December, the classmate that had given us information on Valerie excitedly called out my ex’s name and claimed he had amazing news for her. As they both stood outside the swinging door, all I remember hearing was “So my coworker Valerie…” and the door shut. I was crushed. I knew exactly what had happened. She had broken up with her girlfriend and he had put in a good word for my ex. Sure enough, she entered the room with a huge grin and started talking about how she basically was going to start “talking” to Valerie.
At this time I had already broken up with my girlfriend so anyone was fair game, except my ex had always claimed Valerie was not her type and would never go for her. I love how girls, gay or straight, always change their mind about what their “type” is. So they did start talking and hanging out. Of course I was jealous; I had seen this girl first! If anyone should be talking to her, it should’ve been me. After about a month of them hanging out and talking, I decided I’d get to know Valerie too. After all, my ex was my best friend and we’d all be hanging out one day. I gathered all the courage I could and sent her a message containing only one sentence, “So what’s your story?” I have no idea how or why I came up with that but that’s what I sent. We exchanged awkward messages after that. I wasn’t trying to get with her; I genuinely wanted to be her friend.
My birthday was coming up and I wanted to hang out with her. I didn’t invite her to my party because I didn’t know her that well but my ex informed me she wanted to attend. She gave me Valerie’s number to invite her. I agreed and let them know my party started at 2. All of my guests were at the party except two people: my ex and Valerie. They didn’t end up showing up until about 8. Punctuality has never mattered to me but at the time there were a lot of rumors circulating about me, my ex, and this new girl Valerie. Once they arrived, it was extremely awkward. I knew something had happened between my ex and Valerie because they were being weird. It was hard for me to be comfortable around them so I deiced to just ignore them. I wasn’t going to let them ruin my birthday.
Valerie tried and tried to make small talk but I wasn’t paying attention. The girl I had been, I guess crushing on, was involved with my ex. We interacted some more and we started to warm up to each other. When she left I knew that we would be friends, we ended the night on a good note. She even called after dropping off my ex to chat. Of course I didn’t think much of it; she was still with my ex. We made plans to hang out the next day, sans my ex, and from there a friendship started.
We surprisingly hit it off while at Borders and it was clear we were extremely compatible. We started talking more and more until we realized we really liked each other. It was my fairy tale come true.
I am not proud to say that I basically took my ex's girl, but during the time i was getting to know Valerie, foul things were being said and done. I like to believe that everything happens for a reason. Valerie asked for honesty and that is what I gave her.

Favourite Things #3: Apple's 'El Capitan' Power Mac case
Happy Accidents Productions posted a photo:

The return of Steve Jobs to Apple in 1997 turned the company around, especially with the launch of those glorious iMacs in 1998. Splendid though they were, you couldn't really alter much, e.g. upgrade the graphics cards. However, at the start of '99 the top end Power Macs got their own makeover, with the introduction of the 'El Capitan' cases, which were first used on the G3 Blue and White Power Macs from January-August 1999. Then the G4s were introduced that September, with the blue cases now in a sober graphite colour. It's the wonderful design (courtesy of Jonathan Ive) combined with the sheer practicality of use, due to the way the door just opens at the side if you want to alter anything. Having owned PCs where you had to unscrew the case to get to the inner workings, this is a absolute godsend. Shame Apple moved away from that idea with the G5 and Mac Pro cases.
I own one example of each, the G3 B&W (ran Tiger beautifully, but was finished due to a surge protector failing to do its job during a power cut), the graphite Mystic which was my first Mac and indeed is still my workhorse, plus these two, a non-working Quicksilver, and a working 2004 dual processor 1.25 GHz MDD example. Hopefully, if the Happy Accidents studio becomes a reality, at least one of these will be a part of it.
Macs are cool, but these are just my favourites, in design terms, and they're still fine computers today, even if Apple have officially ended support with the launch of Snow Leopard.

The CEO of BCM Construction, Kurt Carman.
I've climed Mt. Shata with Kurt a few times. And as far as a client, BCM is one of the best I've had in my photo career, so I always go the extra mile for them.
I had to do quite a bit of Photoshop cleanup of a rat's nest of computer wires and peripherals on the wall and under the desk CR of subject. The first couple attempts were not as clean as this, which finally was a combination of layers, clones, clone brush, and healing brush.
It was one of those situations where you have limited time with the executive, he's busy, and there's no way in hell will the computer wires can be disconnected.
